Sara Genn

Sara Genn - Promise and ProofSara Genn was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1972 and by the age of six was collected by the National Gallery and London's Children's Collection. After studying at York House School in Vancouver, Genn completed her BFA at Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario. She was awarded the British Columbia Provincial Scholarship in Visual Art and achieved the highest standing the North American Advanced Placement Art Program. She began showing her paintings in Canada at the age of 18 and sold out 72 paintings in her first one-woman show in 1992.

Genn's paintings are driven by her desire to create places of lyrical vibration and reflection while honouring the act of painting and its materials. Her compositions are deceptively simple and carry a quiet energy regardless of scale. Genn's oils reach sizes of 9 x 11 feet while her watercolours are often no more than 8 x 10 inches. At times Genn references the landscape or personal objects, but her work returns always to her obsessive attention to organic pattern-making, a repetition of motifs and a sensitive reverence to colour and the absence of colour.
Sara Genn - in a field
In 2003, after year-long sojourns in Paris and Seville, Genn relocated to New York and allowed her paintings to evolve as increasingly soft, organic, human-made, vulnerable objects while thriving as archival and permanent records of her internal world. Her work is experimental within her honoured materials, paintings existing as pure paintings, for the sake of painting, to thrive as objects of contemplation, desire and solitude.

Genn's work has been featured on national billboards for Nissan Infiniti, for the Toronto Arts Council, and recently in American Art Collector Magazine, New York Magazine, Tatler and Domino. Her work is collected in the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe and Australia.
