Easter Sundays
In 1989, a group of volunteers began providing monthly meals to residents of McLaren House AIDS Hospice through a program called Easter's Sundays. These congregate meals now take place monthly at Vancouver Native Health and occasionally at other locations. Volunteers plan, shop for, prepare, and serve meals for ten to fifty people with AIDS. Easter's Sundays often have a theme, decorations, and entertainment.
This program promotes the social aspect of food, which is as vitally important as the nutritional content. Easter Sundays are a one day per month catered hot meal service open to all individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. This service is in honour of the agency’s founder, Easter Armas. In 2009, Easter Sunday will recognize 20 years of feeding those living with HIV/AIDS.
